Modern parenting: Are we raising a generation of wimps?

Updated: Oct 29, 2019

Childhood is a time to explore the world, build relationships and develop resilience.

Compared to the 1900's, the experience of #childhood in western countries has changed #dramatically. #Obstacles have been removed, #environments made #safer, and the atrocities of child labour #eliminated. Being a child today is a #safe affair with #mortality at an all time low.

On the flip side, taking #risks is also #discouraged, #losing eradicated and any perceived #danger in everyday life "bubble wrapped". Children are not only being #protected from genuine threats to their #development, but also from the #scratches and #bruises of everyday #life from which we learn #resilience, #strength and #resolve.

Make no mistake, over #protection today results in an inability to cope with tomorrow resulting higher #anxiety, #depression and a myriad of #phobias. By protecting our children from the #results of "cause and effect" we inadvertently rob them of the opportunity to grow and develop into confident, competent #adults.

Dr Nathan H Lents discusses further in his #article about the danger of overprotective parenting and the long term effects it can have on their #development. Article Link.
