Photographic lighting: What is the inverse square law of light?

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

The inverse square law at first seems confusing but there are two main points to be aware of.

1. The larger the #light source, the closer the subject is to it, the softer the light. This is why #softboxes positioned close to the subject create pleasing light for flattering portraits. As you move away, the #shadows become harsher and the blemishes are revealed more in the face.

2. The second thing to be aware of is the #intensity of the light reduces dramatically as you move away from it. This is worth keeping in mind when you are setting your aperture and shutter speed and want to achieve a specific type of #effect.
